ITALIAN PAINTED PANEL CIRCA 1820

This early 19th Century Italian canvas overdoor, is painted in the Neoclassical grotesque style. Grotesques ( from the Italian grottesca, meaning of a cave ) are ornamental arrangements of arabesques, interlaced with garlands and fantastic human and animal figures. These are usually set out in a symmetrical pattern around some form of architectural framework. This well painted canvas displays a pair of elegant birds, figures and an array of colorful flowers, reflecting the refined beauty of the period. Italy, circa 1820.
