A collection of decorative Chinese Turquoise Foo ( Fu ) dogs. Originating during the Han Dynasty ( 206BCE-211CE ), these were guardian lions standing sentry in front of palaces, temples, and homes of the elite. They were large and imposing with open mouths mid roar. It was much later that smaller more portable ones were produced. The resemblance to Chow Chow and Shih Tzu led them to be called dogs. Circa 1960.
Great as lamps, photo included.
