A rustic oak mule chest. A mule chest is a hybrid between a coffer and a chest of drawers. It features a hinged lid for the top storage compartment and a single lower drawer. The name is believed to come from the fact that the piece is a hybrid like the mule, or because the bottom drawers were historically used to store mules, the period term for slippers.
