LOUIS PHILIPPE COMMODE

A wonderfully, book-matched mahogany veneered Louis Philippe commode. Four drawers with a dark grey marble top. It is common for the veneer to split on the sides of Louis Philippe commodes, due to shrinkage over time. The spit on the right has been repaired however the split on the left is still showing. Minor chips to veneer on some edges. France, circa 1840.

Antique furniture’s longevity and aesthetic appeal are the results of superior materials and time-intensive construction methods that have largely been abandoned by modern mass-production.
1. Superior Old-Growth Timber
The primary reason antique furniture outlasts modern equivalents is the wood itself. Pre-20th-century craftsmen used old-growth timber, which grew slowly in competitive forest environments. This resulted in incredibly dense grain patterns and high natural oil content, making the wood structurally stronger and more resistant to rot and pests than today’s fast-grown, farmed “new-growth” lumber.
2. Joinery vs. Fasteners
Modern furniture often relies on metal screws, staples, and chemical glues that become brittle and fail over time. In contrast, antiques utilize interlocking joinery such as:
  • Dovetail Joints: Used in drawers, these flared “fingers” of wood physically lock together, becoming stronger when pulled.
  • Mortise and Tenon: A deep “peg-and-hole” system used for frames that provides massive surface area for structural integrity.
  • Wood Pegs: Traditional craftsmen often used wooden pegs that expanded and contracted at the same rate as the rest of the piece, preventing the splitting common with metal nails.
3. Hand-Applied Finishes
Unlike the thick, plastic-like polyurethane sprays used today, antiques were finished with natural substances like shellac, beeswax, or linseed oil. These finishes do not sit “on top” of the wood but rather nourish it. Over a century, these treatments react with light and air to develop a patina—a deep, lustrous glow that cannot be replicated in a factory.
