ROMAN CAPRICCIO

A fantasy Roman view featuring the Ponte Salario, also called Salaro ( Salary Bridge ). Ponte Salaro was named after Via Salaria, the road used to carry salt ( for food preservation and cheese production ) to the north. Many painters of the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries depicted it in their Italianate landscapes. In 1829, the medieval tower was demolished and in 1867, papal troops blew up the bridge.The painting was previously an overdoor and has been resized and framed. Oil on canvas, minor paint losses and retouching. Rome, 19th century.
