Attractive hand coloured, engravings of knight’s coat of arms. The Order of Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem were a catholic military order founded in the 12th century. There are six coats of arms to choose from. Sold individually. France, 17th century.
The engravings are from The The Martyrology of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem ( known as Malta ) by F. Mathieu de Goussancourt, engraved by Michel Van Lochom, published in 1643. The book documents the knight’s accomplishments, coats of arms, proofs of chivalry and genealogical descent of most of the illustrious houses of Europe, with the retinue of the grand masters, cardinals, archbishops, bishops, grand priors, bailiffs and generals of the galleys of this order.
TERRE – Brother Michael Terre, was killed in Zoara, in the year 1552. He wore a gold shield with three gules laps, the points at the bottom, some give him the quartered shield of Castile.
S.LVC – SOLD Brother Charles d’Espinay, named the Cheu. de S. Luc, and lord of Harleux of the langue de France, was killed at the first capture of the city of Mahomette in the year 1601.
ROCHE PIC CHELLE – SOLD Brother N. Roch Pich Chelle, of the Auvergne region, whose death and that of his companion can be better described than by giving here a copy of the letter from Rev. Peter of the Cross, Rector of the College of Lesuires in Malta, to Rev. PMaillant, Rector of the College of Avignon.
PERVSIIS – SOLD Brother Louis de Perussis Provencal, died in a place of honor in a fight against the Heretics, in the year 1628.
MAVRES – Brother N. de Maures Gaseon called du Voile, in the year 1608. searching on the Mediterranean Sea for opportunities to show the greatness of his courage to the enemies of the Faith, met a Turkish ship, fought it and set it on fire, but a volley of cannon from the enemy took his life.
