
Towards Gisborne by Robert Field Proctor, 1879-1931. Signed bottom right. Born in Scotland, he arrived Christchurch c.1886. He studied at the Canterbury School of Art with Sydney Lough Thompson, Frances Hodgkins and Raymond McIntyre, all influenced by Petrus van der Velden. Proctors stylistically closet to Sydney Lough Thompson. Proctor and Thompson returned to NZ in 1905 after undertaken the Grand Tour and attended Academie Julien in Paris. He exhibited often and became an instructor at the Canterbury School or Art. He later moved to Auckland and taught at Elam School of Art. His work is represented in major New Zealand galleries.
