PORTRAIT OF D. OUDART LOSTE 1626

A well painted portrait of Dom Oudart Loste, Canon of St. Martin in Ypen ( now Ypres, Belgium ) aged 26. Inscription top left, family coat of arms top right and the sitter is holding a bible. Historical documents from 1632 and 1652 show him active in legal and administrative matters for the church, including acting as a prosecutor and managing property in the region of Hallines and Saint-Omer.

Oil on panel 1626. As with many paintings of this age, on wood panel, there is flaking, with some old retouching, mainly to the background. At some stage it has had a varnish, possibly to stabilize the surface and protect from further flaking. Carved and gilded wooden frame with a foliage pattern.

Painting H 725mm, W 575mm, Frame H 880mm, W 730mm
